BACKGROUND:

Dr Mónica Felipe-Sotelo finished her Degree in Environmental Chemistry at the University of A Coruña (Spain) in June 1999, and she obtained her Master Degree in Environmental Science and Technology in 2001 at the same University. Her PhD Thesis was focussed on the development of analytical methods for the direct analysis of heavy metals in environmental solid phases. The work aimed to the assessthe effect of traffic and the activity of coal-fired power plants in soils and sediments. Part of the pre-doctoral work was developed at the Environmental Science Department at Plymouth University.

Her post-doctoral research at the Environmental Chemistry Department at CSIC in Barcelona (2005) was focussed on the application of chemometrical models to study the geographical temporal distribution of pollutants in diverse environmental compartments, as well as the development of a predictive model for atmospheric contaminants.

After a postdoctoral stay at the Atomic spectroscopy group at Loughborough University (2006-2007), Dr Felipe-Sotelo worked as lecturer at the Chemistry Department at the University of Lleida (Spain) during the academic years 2006-2007 and 2007-2008, in Analytical Chemistry for the Degrees in Biotechnology, and Dietetics and Nutrition. During this period, Dr Felipe-Sotelo continued her collaboration with the Environmental Chemistry Department at CSIC in Barcelona.


INTERESTS:

After joining the Environmental Radiochemistry Group at Loughborough University in 2008, Dr Felipe-Sotelo's research has been focussed on the safety of the disposal of intermediate and low level radioactive waste. Dr Felipe-Sotelo has participated in projects funded by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) on the effect of anthropogenic organic compounds on the solubility of key radionuclides under near-field conditions as well as a series long –term experiments (solubility, advection and diffusion) devoted to demonstrating the concept of chemical containment.
