BACKGROUND:

I have a BSc in Geology and a PhD in clay mineral diagenesis and organic geochemistry. I have worked and undertaken post-doctoral research applied to the petroleum industry, where I developed experimental geochemical techniques to examine the formation and diagenesis of clay minerals. Here I also developed an interest in geochemical modelling. In 1997 I moved to the nuclear industry (BNFL) where I have applied modelling to environmental radiochemistry and geochemistry. In 2008 I was appointed as NNL Senior Research Fellow in Waste and Environmental Geochemistry.

INTERESTS:
My current interests are in the biogeochemistry of contaminated land and waste disposal systems and the role that microbes play in mediating redox reactions of radionuclides. My work has involved studies of concepts for deep geological disposal in the UK and France and near-surface low level waste repositories in the UK and Finland, where I have used site and experimental data to validate models of biogeochemical processes.
